16 families displaced by NW-side apartment fire Saturday night

Several families are looking for temporary accommodations following an apartment fire on the city's northwest side.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - Several families are looking for temporary accommodations after an apartment fire on the city's northwest side.

The blaze broke out just after 7 p.m. Saturday at the La Joya Apartments in the 4500 block of Candletree Circle. Firefighters from Pike Twp. and IFD battled a stubborn fire with flames shooting through the building's roof at one point. The complex is located just east of I-65 and west of Guion Rd.

A fire department spokesperson told Eyewitness News that as many as eight apartment units were badly damaged by fire, smoke and/or water.

Efforts to bring the blaze under control were hampered somewhat by low water pressure from nearby hydrants. The spokesperson explained when two firetrucks draw water at the same time, there can be a loss of water pressure.

Investigators are working now to determine what started the fire.

The occupant and three young children - ages 5, 3 and 9 months - were in the apartment unit when the fire started. She had to drop the three kids off a second story balcony to a neighbor before the fire department arrived and then jumped herself because they couldn't get to their front door.

She was later taken to the hospital with minor injuries, but everyone is expected to be okay.

No firefighters were hurt.

Investigators are still looking into what started the fire.

The Red Cross is helping the 16 families displaced by the fire.
