Netflix has officially announced that the record-breaking Korean series, The Squid Game, will be renewed for Season 2. The announcement was made on Sunday, June 12, with a teaser and a note from Director Hwang Dong-hyuk.
An excerpt of the announcement reads, “It took 12 years to bring the first season of ‘Squid Game’ to life last year. But it took 12 days for ‘Squid Game’ to become the most popular Netflix series ever.
“As the writer, director, and producer of ‘Squid Game,’ a huge shout out to fans around the world. Thank you for watching and loving our show… Join us once more for a whole new round.”

Squid Game was released last year and became Netflix’s most-streamed show of all time, with 1.65 billion hours of views in its first 28 days.
Starring Greg Chun, Stephen Fu, Paul Nakauchi, Hideo Kimura, Vivian Lu, Rama Vallury, and Tom Choi, season one follows the story of Gi-hun, a debt-ridden chauffeur who is invited alongside 455 indebted players, to play a series of children’s games for the grand prize of 45.6 billion won.
The games come with a twist, though – you lose and die.
Now that it has been confirmed that a sequel is coming, let’s look at five things to expect in season two of the show.

The Squid Game Season one raised a very high bar. So we expect Season two to raise a higher one. Besides, Season two should be able to answer some certain questions Season one raised. Who is the Front Man? We finally got to see his face towards the end of the show, where he shot his own brother, Jun-ho, a police detective. Did Jun-ho die when he fell off the cliff after being shot?
We also expect Gi-hun to confront and investigate the cult-like organization behind the Squid Game.
And, of course, the games should be more spectacular than in the first season.
Most of the cast won’t come back
This is because they all died in Season one. Of course, the producers could bring them back through flashbacks, but that is unlikely going to happen. Right now, the show’s lead star Lee Jung-Jae who played Gi-hun is the only one confirmed to return for Season two.
More than one winner
In Season one, only one winner emerged from the games, while others died. Speaking to Variety, Hwang revealed the second season would question whether humanity can conquer all as a united front. He said: “I want to ask the question, ‘Is true solidarity between humans possible?”
He added about the season one winner, “If they were capable of talking with one another, of co-operating with one another, I do agree that there could have been a possibility that we could have seen more winners.”
So we expect characters in the second season to co-operate this time around so that more winners can emerge.

Young-hee’s boyfriend should be more terrifying
Young-hee is the infamous animatronic doll in the first season of the show. Netflix announced that her boyfriend, Cheol-Su, will be introduced in the show’s second season. If Young-hee was terrifying in Season one, we expect Cheol-su to have us peeing in our pants.
Release date
It took 12 years for the first season to be released. Of course, it won’t be the same case for the second season. Hwang told Vanity Fair that the second season will be released between the end of 2023 and sometime in 2024.
So, guys, these are the five things to expect in the second season of the Squid Game. Let’s keep our fingers crossed. We can’t wait to see what the new season has in store for us.
