Bayanni: Rising star anticipated to make waves in Nigeria’s music industry

When videos of his cover songs for Ckay‘s Felony, Davido‘s Jowo and Fireboy‘s Peru went viral on social media in 2021, several Nigerians lauded Bayanni, describing him as the “next big thing” in the music industry. Their expectations seem to have been validated as he has been signed up to one of the prominent record labels in the country.

So, who is Bayanni, whose sonorous voice is making Nigerians anticipate the potential hit bangers he will record and get people jiggy in clubs?

Abimbola Oladokun, popularly known as Bayanni, was born on June 25, 1997, in Lagos State. He was raised in a Christian family, which upholds moral and altruistic values

He attended primary and secondary schools in Lagos State. He is currently an undergraduate student at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife. His education was put on hold for a while due to incessant labour action (strike) by university lecturers.

Career

When he was younger, Bayanni loved to watch or listen to music on the television, radio, phone, or cassette player. He became familiar with the sounds of afrobeats, hip-hop, R&B, fuji, highlife, soul and pop by listening to music by African and western artists. He began singing when he was a member of the choir at his church. When he was in the choir, he improved his voice skills and began to perfect his composing skills.

After deciding early on that he wanted to be a professional musician, Bayanni decided to concentrate on pop music rather than gospel music. He began writing afro-pop and afrobeats songs in his parent’s house, inspired by popular Nigerian artistes such as Davido, Wizkid, Burna Boy, and Olamide.

After noticing the development of his songwriting abilities, Bayanni, initially known by the stage name Zhenoboy, went to local recording facilities to record his tunes. He made friends with many sound producers in Lagos and Ile-Ife right away after they heard his music and were inspired by it.

Even with his busy schedule as a student, Bayanni managed to find time to write music. He succeeded because he put his passion first and pursued it. This led to his rapid rise within the OAU music community he subsequently got invited to perform at university-sponsored events.

Bayanni began to record covers of popular songs to further his career, which he then posted on his social media pages. In April 2021, He released a version of Ckay’s Felony. He recorded a rendition of Jowo by Davido for October 14, 2021. Five days later, on October 19, 2021, he published a cover of Fireboy DML’s Peru.

On April 12th, 2022, he released his eagerly anticipated single, African Beauty. The music was produced by Blaise Beatz, and Michael Synx handled the mixing. The song’s accompanying music video was shot by Pharouk Damilola Films and released on the same day.

African Beauty has accumulated tens of thousands of streams and downloads since its release. The song is slowly climbing the Afropop charts across the country. Duro (co-written by Frescool), BMW and Ballerina are some of the other songs released by the artiste.

Who discovered Bayanni?

He is a graduate of the Mavin Academy. He is signed up to Don Jazzy-led Mavin Record, which put him through their artist development program so he could perfect his skills.

On August 23, 2022, Bayanni was formally unveiled as a new member of the Mavins. A small video clip featuring Mr Funny, Don Jazzy, and stand-up comic, Brain Jotter in a lab environment heralded the announcement of the artiste’s signing. He will work with artists on the label such as Boy Spyce, Ruger, Ladipoe, Ayra Starr, Crayon, Rema, and Magixx.

The singer, who was once thought to be a Davido Music Worldwide (DMW) singer, has won the hearts of many Nigerians with his deep voice and endearing lyrics. Soon after his signing with Mavins, a four-track recording: The Bayanni EP, with an exclusive license under Mavin Global Holdings, was released. Projects from the Bayanni EP included songs like Body, Family, Ta Ta Ta, and Kala.

He is said to go to and from school, his music studio, and his parent’s house in Lagos.
