In an interview with Chelsea TV Hazard said: “The boy put his whole body onto the ball and I was just trying to kick the ball.
“I think I kicked the ball and not the boy. I apologise. The ballboy came into the changing room and we had a quick chat. I apologised and the boy apologised as well and it is over. Sorry.”
The local police were involved in the matter, although Morgan and his family decided not to press charges against Hazard. Despite the decision not to pursue legal action, South Wales Police stated that they had to investigate the incident due to three complaints filed by members of the public.
Hazard received a red card and was subsequently banned for three games by the Football Association. Morgan faced criticism and accusations of time-wasting, although some defended him as his actions were considered to be typical of ball boys in football matches.
Following the incident, the English Football Association in a statement reminded “all clubs of their responsibilities in ensuring ball boys and other personnel around the pitch act appropriately at all times”.
