A Nigerian man, Olaniyi Nasiru Ojikitu, was found guilty and sentenced to nearly seven and a half years in a US prison for his involvement in a multi-year romance scam.
According to American prosecutors, Okijutu, a permanent legal resident in the US, opened approximately 25 bank accounts in his name, a false name, and a shell company name, through which nearly $3.4 million was received and placed fraudulently.

Nasir Ojikutu, Olaniyi Ojikutu, and a scam ring preyed on the elderly. The prosecution revealed that the Nigerian and nine others were charged in connection with Operation Gold Phish, a Chicago sting operation that discovered fraudsters targeting the elderly. On Wednesday, February 8, 2023, Ojikutu was sentenced to 88 months in jail after being accused of wire fraud in operation, according to a local media report.

According to The Punch, Ojikutu fled to Canada, where he was apprehended and turned over to the US in January 2020. In July 2022, he pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud. According to the prosecution, scammers in the United States and Nigeria preyed on elderly people and earned their trust through an online romance scam before stealing their money. Purchased automobiles and sent them to Nigeria for resale The accused contacted the victims through social media channels such as Facebook, Instagram, and Match.com, a dating app.

According to authorities, the main suspect, Ojikutu, fraudulently collected monies for personal gain, including buying automobiles in the United States and exporting them to Nigeria for sale. Some individuals lost thousands of dollars as a result of the suspect’s conduct. In the case, eight of the nine defendants admitted guilt. Daniel Samuel Eta, also known as Captain and Etaoko of Skokie, the alleged ringleader of the scheme, pled not guilty and his trial is still ongoing, according to authorities.
