Echo is receiving positive reviews from both critics and audiences, with Alaqua Cox’s exceptional performance becoming a prominent topic of discussion. All five episodes of the series were released on Disney+ and Hulu in a single drop on January 9. The episodes are named after five female members of the Choctaw tribe who possess cosmic powers and pass them down through generations.
Series creator Sydney Freeland has made this comic book series adaptation very unique, forgoing some of the poorly conceived elements from the source material, and adding new inherited cosmic powers. The show is the first Disney+ Marvel series to carry a TV-MA rating.

What Does Each Episode Name Of Alaqua Cox’s Echo Mean?
While Alaqua Cox’s Maya Lopez is just a trained fighter with the ability to mimic others’ fighting skills in the comics, Echo builds the character as a cosmic-powered hero. She inherits her powers from her Native American roots, the Choctaw matrilineal heritage to be specific. Each episode of the series is named after her superpowered ancestors as well as herself — Chafa, Lowak, Tuklo, Taloa, and Maya. (via IMDb)
Chafa
The first episode is named after Chafa, one of the first Choctaw women to gain cosmic powers. The flashbacks in this episode revolve around the character played by Julia Jones. The 49-minute-long episode explores Maya Lopez’s backstory, as she’s forced to leave her hometown of Tamaha, Oklahoma, to start anew in New York.
Lowak
The character Lowak, another of Maya’s ancestors, draws inspiration from the comic version, who is a war gamer from Cahokia. She hosts the power of the Phoenix in the comics. However, in the series, she is revealed as a stickball athlete in the flashbacks, played by Morningstar Angeline. Lasting 39 minutes, the episode witnesses Maya seeking help from her disapproving family against Wilson Fisk’s army.

Tuklo
Tuklo’s characterization in the series is kept close to her comic book counterpart. Played by Dannie McCallum, she serves as a sharpshooter in the old Choctaw Lighthorsemen unit. In this episode spanning 42 minutes, Maya Lopez suffers collateral damage when Fisk’s army descends upon her Tamaha home.
Taloa
As the series approaches its conclusion, Maya Lopez’s past and future come to a crossroads. In the episode named after her mother Taloa, the flashback sequences reveal her mother’s healing powers. The character is played by the deaf actress Katarina Ziervogel. The runtime of this episode is 37 minutes.

Maya
The final episode takes its name from the main character, played by Alaqua Cox, who is deaf and an amputee in real life. The episode unfolds as the lives of Maya’s family are threatened by Wilson Fisk’s army, which infiltrates the Choctaw Nation Powwow. In the 34-minute episode, Maya Lopez must activate the powers passed down to her by her ancestors to protect her family.
