Indianapolis - Local firefighters got extremely close to a blaze Friday in a life-saving exercise.
At the Wayne Township Fire Department, firefighters used a simulator to train for a flashover. That's when a fire sets off flammable gases and creates a big ball of fire.
The simulator allows firefighters to watch the fire above their heads and learn the conditions of a potentially deadly flashover.
"If we're inside the residence, we're able to recognize the conditions of flashover which is the high heat. And, if we know that's going downhill, then we have to react to it rapidly or we may lose our life in seconds," said Captain Michael Pruitt, Wayne Township Fire Department.
The firefighters that went through training Fridaywill train other firefighters about flashovers.
