We might need to turn the subtitles on, but not even the sweater-thick Irish accents of Paul Mescal and Saoirse Ronan could make us less excited for Foe, their upcoming thriller.
Described as “grounded sci-fi,” the Amazon pic centers on a farmer couple in the not too distant future. It’s also premiering in the not too distant future, and thank goodness, because it looks goooood. Here’s everything we know about it:
What’s Foe about?
Without giving too much away, farmers and AI. It’s based on Iain Reid’s 2018 novel (his debut novel, I’m Thinking of Ending Things, from 2016 became a Netflix movie), so you can read the Wikipedia if you want to know the twist. Deadline describes the movie as a “haunting exploration of marriage and identity set in an uncertain world. Hen and Junior farm a secluded piece of land that has been in Junior’s family for generations, but their quiet life is thrown into turmoil when an uninvited stranger shows up at their door with a startling proposal. The pic dotes on the persistent questions about the nature of humanity (and artificial humanity) in the not too distant future.”
“What I find really powerful about the movie is it asks us to be awake and to be alive,” director Garth Davis told Vanity Fair. “A lot of the problems we face in relationships and with the environment and with all sorts of things coming our way is that we’re asleep at the wheel. This movie is really saying, ‘Wake up. Your life is precious, and if you take it for granted, you’re going to lose it.’”

Who’s in it?
Paul Mescal and Saoirse Ronan star as Junior and Hen[rietta], while Aaron Pierre is their mysterious visitor, replacing LaKeith Stanfield, who was originally cast in the role.
