While over a dozen characters have been added to Genshin Impact since release on September 28, 2020, miHoYo has yet to add another Electro character to the playable roster – The Raiden Shogun and Kujou Sara, coming in Version 2.1 of the open-world JRPG, will be the first-ever new ones.
Some fans believe there’s a lore reason behind that: the Electro Archon’s current motivations and the Vision Hunt Decree. Except there’s a big flaw in that theory.

Genshin Impact Electro characters lore – Vision Hunt Decree and Raiden Shogun interference theory debunked
Ever since the Liyue chapter in Genshin Impact, we learned in-game that The Raiden Shogun, the current Electro Archon, is confiscating the Visions of those in Inazuma. And has closed the region’s borders. Moreover, she stopped distributing new Visions to the inhabitants of Teyvat. Because of that, many players started to believe this why is miHoYo has yet to add new Electro characters.
Now, I’m pretty sure many players have already realized this theory doesn’t hold up. However, I’ve actually seen more and more players believing it these past few months. So it’s time for a proper debunk.
Nearly all the playable characters in Genshin Impact have Visions, which they received from one of the Seven Archons. First off, it’s important to note that the Archons each distribute Visions of their element. But they don’t limit themselves to the inhabitants of their own region.
Secondly, it’s primordial to understand it’s not like all the playable characters received their Vision just before they became playable.
The number of new Electro Vision holders in Teyat isn’t increasing right now. True. But there are still hundreds, if not thousands of people with Electro Visions. Some might become playable characters later on.

Why miHoYo did not add any new Electro characters until now?
We’ll have to ask miHoYo next time we get an interview opportunity because there’s no official answer. Personally speaking, I think it’s a simple design choice. Balancing Cryo and Pyro characters seems much easier for miHoYo so far. Hence why these two Elements got so many new characters since launch.
It’s also important to note miHoYo isn’t making these new characters overnight. It looks like during early development, miHoYo decided to prioritize certain Elements over others. For the first year or so of the game’s life. That’s also why the Dendro Element and characters weren’t implemented yet.
With Version 2.1, we’ll be getting two new Electro characters in one go. Moreover, it’s likely we’ll get many more later on. Yae Miko, who will be playable at some point – we don’t know when – is an Electro user too.
Last but not least, miHoYo confirmed in a Q&A several months ago that Electro would be buffed in “future versions”. So this might be why no new Electro character was added until now. The buff has yet to be implemented. and perhaps it’ll finally come with Version 2.1.
For now, we can only wait for the live stream, which should happen this week of August 16-23. Version 2.1 with The Raiden Shogun, Kujou Sara, and Sangonomiya Kokomi, should be launching on September 1, 2021.
