Pui Pui Molcar anime explained
Pui Pui Molcar is a stop motion short anime series (episodes were around 3 minutes long) focusing on the fusion of guinea pigs and cars, the Molcar. The series depicts the everyday lives of the Molcar, which closely reflects our lives, with some deep, dialogue-less commentary on society.
Pui Pui Molcar was broadcast from January 5 to March 23, 2021, at 07:30 on TV Tokyo. It quickly became a huge social phenomenon in Japan. The Twitter account for the series went from 1000 followers before episode 1 to 45,000 followers before episode 2.
The series managed to reach a huge number of people beyond the originally planned kids audience. Both children and adults could enjoy the cute Molcar and the various situations reflecting our real world.
Pui Pui Molcar gained a huge following not only in Japan but also in countries that could relate to the hectic traffic scenes of the series. For example, in Taiwan most notably, where traffic police officers even started using the series’ characters as mascots.
A Pui Pui Molcar compilation movie with all 12 episodes of the series was also broadcast in Japanese cinemas in July 2021.
This is the second time Pui Pui Molcar has a game adaptation. The first one is a sociage (mobile game) Pui Pui Molcar Mogumogu Parking. It was released on August 13 on iOS and Android. Overall, this is a huge IP, and I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if that Switch game manages to sell over a million copies seeing the platform’s player base in Japan.
