I don't know exactly how to go about doing this, but as noted above, study pictures ASAP.

Not that you should just walts in and ask, try calling, but see if you can come in and see if you can see the real thing. Might not work though. Make sure you don't tresspass on RR property! Arent the GP40PH-2's entering their 40th year of service?
I don't know how easily Transit would allow someone to come in, say to the MMC, and study these things up close. But there's tons of places where you can see them (just stand on the platform!). And also, they are now in their 41st YOS. They were featured in Locomotive 2008.
