With countless updates and (probably) more to come, I've now fully enjoyed this cool game and I am pretty positive about it. I also loved Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero, which are the best games to compare this with I believe.
The Sea of Thieves-cartoony style fits well with this funny and creative game. There's lot to explore in the backyard with creative freedom on where to establish your base. Not only that, every type of bug you kill, helps your arsenal of weapons, housing and other things to build.
There are occasional bug-through-wall encounters and some minor prerelease bugs sometimes. One biggest is that your coop partner(s) dont get story achievements right away. It sometimes pops hours later or not at all. Also see the comments on multiple achievements here on TA for guidance. Definitely should be fixed.
The story is okay, but sometimes a bit vague on what your next objective should be. Once you figure out the sidequests from BURG.L, scanning found materials, upgrades with Raw Science and the main objectives, it becomes better to follow what to do next. Still, in my opinion, this could be a bit better explained in-game.
I HIGHLY recommend playing this coop, because its superfun together. Not only that, its rather difficult sometimes with high damage rates from the insects and spiders that can attack you. So having a friend is a BIG help.
Together with the relentless combat, the survival mode is a nice challenge, but I think the best way to enjoy this game at its finest. Manage thirst and hunger with dewdrops and roasted insect chunks. However, I do think that the rate hunger and thirst drops down is pretty fast, a good preperation is definitely recommended for exploration. Else you'll simply die, respawn and lose your stuff (which can be picked up again luckily).
It's also worth noting that some constructions or gear require a lot of resources. Sometimes a bit too much. Especially repairing gear. Still, it didn't prohibit any progression, so i guess it's not that big of a deal.
The diversity in the surroundings is very cool. From (ant)caves and (maybe not-so-empty) holes to an underwater realm, but also higher up in bushes and branches. Secret area's and labs are found here and there. I loved the setting!
As an Achievement Hunter, i would have prefered some more different achievements beside the current list. There are so many possibilities and in my opinion, they could have added around 10 - 15 more with lower gamerscore division and more creative things to obtain with them. For example; three tiers of "Find 5-10-25 area's" or something like "Kill every type of bug."
To sum it up:
Pro's:
- Awesome area's
- Working mechanics
- Challenging survival mode
- Coop coop coop!
- Creative basebuilding (anywhere!)
- Fast loading times (Series X)
Con's:
- Sometimes there's just a lot/too much enemies which can lead to frustration
- A bit unclear what to do next sometimes
- You can die pretty fast
- Achievement popping problems for joined teammembers
- Wish there were more achievements to obtain after getting most of them!
