BROKEN TOOTH ISLAND
At some point while wandering through Snaxburg (provided you’ve completed the side quests for Snorpy, Chandlo, Triffany, Floofty, and Shelda), Snorpy will approach you and say that he’s found another possible source of the seismic activity that’s been plaguing the island.
Shake it Up! “Meet Snorpy in Simmering Springs.” Head to the beach to find Snorpy and Chandlo. Another seismic event occurs, revealing a new island off the coast of Snaktooth.
Gather Round! “Ask Triffany to help investigate.”
“Also ask Floofty.”
“And maybe Shelda?” Return to Snaxburg and talk to all three Grumps to get them to join the expedition to the new island.
“Meet Snorpy in Simmering Springs.” Return to the beach to find that Chandlo has constructed a raft.
Set Sail! “Take the raft to the mysterious island.” You can speak to the members of the expedition if you wish. Step aboard the raft to sail to Broken Tooth. Once on the island, take a couple steps forward to trigger a scene.
Light the Way! “Activate the bridge across the cove.” Ascend the “steps” of coral to reach Chandlo. Fire the Trip Shot from brazier to brazier to activate the bridge. Follow Chandlo to a door.
Be Amazed! “Solve the maze to open the way forward.” Guide the Buggy Ball into the hole at the bottom of the doorway and then use the rising and falling pillars to reach a switch at the top. The door will lower and the expedition will proceed forward. As the party begins to argue, Chandlo looks over the cliff and spots a massive Bunger down below.
Big Bunger! “Catch one Bunger Royale.” Jump down to where Chandlo is standing and watch him get tackled by the Bunger. Chandlo will get knocked into an alcove containing a statue with three urns. Chandlo suggests throwing one at the Bunger. When you pick one of these urns up, it’ll begin a countdown. Toss it at the Bunger to shrink it to a more manageable size. Note that there is no timer on the reduced bunger, but after a minute or so, it will grow again. Scan the Bunger to trace its path, and then place a Trip Shot across it to swiftly capture it with your net.
“Feed one Bunger Royale.” Feed the Bunger Royale to Chandlo to trigger a scene.
The cliff you were standing on earlier has now been turned into a base camp. The four Grumps are eager to explore the island in their own ways: Shelda wants to check out the shrines; Triffany the ruins; Floofty the Shrink Spice; and Chandlo wants to eat new Bugsnax to try and grow in size.
Island Time! There are four separate sub-quest lines that will need to be completed to progress. You can do these in any order, but for the purpose of this guide we'll tackle them in the order on the quest list.
“Help Triffany investigate.” Speak to Triffany to start her questline “Past Tense!”
“Help Floofty investigate.” Speak to Floofty to start their questline “Powder Keg!”
“Help Chandlo investigate.” Speak to Chandlo to start his questline “Get Huge!”
“Help Shelda investigate.” Speak to Shelda to start her questline “Have Faith!”
After completing these four questlines, talk to Triffany again to initiate a scene.
Past Tense! “Meet Triffany by the maze door.” Follow Triffany down the beach to a wall with a Buggy Ball hole. Send the Ball through the hole to trigger a scene where Cheddorb crashes through the wall. (Nice Indiana Jones reference!) Follow Triffany to the other side of the wall to reach a new maze door.
“Solve the maze door.” Speak with Triffany and then send the ball through the maze.
Past Tense Pt 2! “Scan clues in the underground chamber.” 4 clues and a Pielobite wandering around. Scan the Destroyed Door, Communal Beds (both of them), and the Large Bonfire. Speak with Triffany.
Past Tense Pt 3! “Meet Triffany by the temple entrance.” Follow Triffany up the nearby ramp, across a plateau to a rock wall. Bring it down with the Snakgrappler.
“Open the way into the temple.” First, we need to get rid of the Millimochi, otherwise it will just put out the torch in front of the temple door. There is a brazier in front of you that will eliminate the cold power, but it is still too big to capture. Head to the left to find a pot of Shrink Spice. Toss it at the Millimochi, Trip Shot from the brazier, capture. Brazier to brazier, open door. Head inside.
Past Tense Pt 4! “Solve the giant maze.” Buggy Ball through hole, left side of maze. Guide around. For this particular maze, you’ll want to avoid the Chocolant, otherwise it will deposit the Ball at the white X (at the beginning of the square obstacle). Fourth wall, tricky timing from first rotating arm to left-right moving pillar. At top, the green line is actually a bridge so that the Ball can hit the switch and bring the door down.
Past Tense Pt 5! “Investigate the temple.” Step inside and talk to Triffany.
“Wait a day for Triffany to finish.” After the conversation, head back to camp to start one of the other sub-quests or fast travel to a bed and sleep if you want to finish this quest line.
“Check on Triffany’s progress.” Once a day has passed, return to the temple and speak with Triffany to complete her quest line.
While on the upper plateau, there’s something you can do to make life easier (especially for Chandlo’s quest line!). Notice that there is a short column between the Spaghider tree and a Shrink Spice statue. There is also a Clawbsteroni trampoline on the ground here. The Bugsnak for this is in front of the temple. Lure it over to the trampoline with a Cheesed Buggy Ball. (The Spaghider may snag the Ball, but by then the Clawbsteroni should be close enough to grab its beloved trampoline.) Climb on top of the column and wait/lure the Clawbsteroni between you and the Shrink Spice statue. Jump over to that side of the gap and light the braziers to drop a ramp, allowing you quick access to a Spice container.
Powder Keg! “Put Shrink Spice into the trough.” Drop down into the area where you captured the Bunger Royale and snag a Shrink Spice jug. Now book it up to Floofty’s area and toss it into the trough (barrel) next to them.
“Report to Floofty.” Speak to them to get the next objective.
“Throw Shrink Spice at Floofty.” Repeat the previous steps, except this time throw it at Floofty.
Powder Keg Pt 2!“Turn Floofty’s hand into Cheddorb.” Capture a Cheddorb. The easiest one is the one you released while breaking the river wall. It has a wide circular path, but it also passes in front of the Shrink Spice. Once you’ve shrunk Cheddorb, you can try to toss a Snak Trap in its path, but it will more than likely run off and hide underneath a log. That’s okay, as we’ve solved this problem against the Peelbugs. Place the Snak Trap on one side of the log and send your Buggy Ball through the other side. Close the Trap, then go and Snakify Floofty’s hand.
“Turn Floofty’s leg into Millimochi.” The Millimochi is a bit more challenging as it’s also frozen. Shrink it first, as that status lasts longer and then set up a Trip Shot between a torch and Millimochi. There is one up by the temple you unlocked for Triffany, and another by the expedition camp. Of course, the latter torches aren’t lit, so you’ll have to light them, starting from the bonfire in the center of the camp.
Powder Keg Pt 3! “Put a Chocolant in Floofty’s trough.” Luckily, there’s a Chocolant near a Shrink Spice altar. (By the underground chamber seen in Triffany’s questline.) Shrink it down and then quickly place a trap in its path before you have to chase it through the chamber. If you want to keep it nearby, have the Buggy Ball doused with chocolate or peanut butter.
Another option is up by the Bunger Royale and Chocolant. Here the Chocolant has enough space to keep trudging along its path, allowing you to set up a trap easily.
However you capture it, return to the trough and then talk to Floofty.
Powder Keg Pt 4! “Return to Floofty later.” Continue along one of the other questlines while waiting for Floofty, or simply sleep for a day until you can return.
Powder Keg Pt 5! “Get Floofty to talk to Shelda.” Talk to Floofty to trigger a scene where they will speak with Shelda and end the questline.
Get Huge! “Catch one Clawbsteroni.” The Clawbsteroni’s are surprisingly easy to catch. Find one that is wandering near a Shrink Spice container and place a Trap in its path after it’s the right size.
“Feed one Clawbsteroni.” Naturally he wants to eat the Bugsnak, so return to camp and feed it to him. This doesn’t do quite what Chandlo has in mind, and after a brief bout of depression, you’re able to convince him to relax for a change.
Get Huge Pt 2! “Shoot some hoops with Chandlo.” Grab a basketball from the basket next to you and shoot them into the hoops. Remember to hold RB to line up your shot. You can also move around if you want to have a closer shot. Win or lose, it doesn’t matter. The first player to 5 wins. (You can rematch Chandlo as much as you want, at least until the end of his questline.)
Get Huge Pt 3! “Catch one Pielobite.” This cowardly pie tin will slip away on you rather quickly. Before you can shrink it, you’ll have to do some prep work, as the plastic cover shell will deflect Shrink Spice. The shell has four green tags that you can pull off the Snakgrappler. Each time you pull off a tag, it will run off. Once the cover is off, grab a Shrink Spice container and toss it at the exposed Pielobite. It can then be caught with a Snak Trap. (If it’s wandering around the upper area of the underground chamber, be mindful of the Spaghider, who will snag your Trap.)
“Feed one Pielobite.” Feed Chandlo.
“Catch one Cellystix.” There is a Cellystix wandering around the upper area of the underground chamber. When you hit it with Shrink Spice, three Chocolants jump off it. If Cellystix remains passive, it’ll stay on its course, allowing you to snag it with a trap. (For some reason, the trap timer is 5 seconds rather than 10.)
“Feed one Cellystix.” Feed Chandlo. After feeding both snax to Chandlo, he’ll want to seek out a way to help Snorpy. To this end, we’re going to put him in touch with the other members of the expedition.
Get Huge Pt 4! “Get Chandlo some life advice.” Talk to Chandlo to trigger a scene where he speaks with Shelda.
“Ask Triffany to talk to Chandlo.”
“Ask Floofty to talk to Chandlo.”
After speaking with these three, speak with Chandlo again to complete his questline.
Have Faith! “Meet Shelda by the Naturae shrine.” Follow Shelda as she leaves base camp and then heads down the river to the left. She asks you to open the way into the shrine.
“Open the way for Shelda in the Naturae shrine.” The steps next to Shelda are a misdirection, leading only to a “breakable” wall, with no clear way to break it. Instead, head up the steps across from where Shelda has stopped and then turn around to find a door flanked by two braziers. Turn around again and use the Clawbsteroni’s trampoline to cross over to the lit brazier. Light the braziers on the far side of the gap to open the door.
While you’re up here, you can light the other brazier on this side of the gap to lower a ramp. This way, you don’t have to rely on the trampoline to reach this area.
Now to cross the gap. There is a Clawbsteroni wandering around with a trampoline on its back, but its path is on the wrong side of the gap. Lure it onto the other side with a Buggy Ball doused with Cheese sauce, then hop across. Once inside, turn to the left and use the Snakgrappler to pull down the breakable wall. Shelda will join you inside.
Have Faith Pt 2! “Meet Shelda inside the crater.” Talk to Shelda to learn more about Snaktooth Island and the mysteries surrounding the Bugsnax. Then, follow Shelda as she leads you down into the crater opposite of the shrine.
“Crack 3 Giant Eggler Shells.” Inside the crater is a statue of a Grumpus holding a spoon in front of an egg cup. Jump inside this cup and use the Snakgrappler to pull the first Giant Eggler towards you. Once it’s in position, jump out of the way and the spoon will crack the egg. Now to find the other two.
One egg is being held by a Spaghider crawling on top of a tree. (This is on the plateau above the temple you opened for Triffany. If you haven’t opened this area yet, progress in Triffany’s “Past Tense!” questline.) While capturing the Spaghider is an option, an easier solution is to Snak Grapple the egg from its grasp. The trick here is that you have to pull it quickly and repeatedly away from the Spaghider or it will noodle it back up into the tree. Stand with your back against the crater and inch forward until you can pull the egg. This’ll give you more of an advantage in getting it away from the Spaghider. Drop it down into the crater and into the egg cup.
The last egg is hidden behind another maze door. To reach it, get back up onto the ledge across from the shrine door. Continue along this ledge, heading further up the river until you find a stationary Lunchpad. Across a wide gap is another Buggy Ball maze door. To reach it, you’ll have to use the Lunchpad and the Clawbsteroni’s trampoline.
To solve the maze, get the Buggy Ball up to the level where the Chocolant is circling around. The snak will pick up your Ball and carry it to the higher level where you can finish guiding it to the switch. The door will lower, revealing the egg. Pull it all the way back to the egg crater and into the egg cup.
Talk to Shelda to complete the quest.
Have Faith Pt 3! “Offer a Tikkada Masala to Shelda’s Box at camp.” Of course, now Shelda wants you to catch one of the epic Bugsnax flittering about. In particular, she wants the Tikkada Masala, the fiery moth-like Snak flying about. Its path is pretty large, but it does spend a lot of time down in the crater, with a convenient source of water. Head up the nearby ramp and get ready to chuck Shrink Spice at the Tikkada while it is in the crater. The trajectory is pretty high, though, so get the snak closer by saucing the ground with Hot Sauce. (If you don’t want to switch that many tools, you can smack it in the face as it’s passing the egg cup.) While it’s shrunk, hop down and place a water-infused Trip Shot across its path. (You can also put Hot Sauce on either side of the line to ensure it will stun itself. Once it’s stunned and the fire is out, capture it with your net.
After that, head back to camp and donate the Tikkada Masala to Shelda’s box. (If you mess up and donate it to the box in Snaxburg, it’ll still count, although you’ll have to come back and talk to Shelda at the expedition camp to proceed anyway.)
Have Faith Pt 4! “Get Shelda to talk to Floofty.” Talk to Shelda to trigger a long conversation with Floofty. This completes Shelda’s quest line.
Again, once you’ve completed all four tasks for Island Time!, return to Triffany at the expedition camp and talk to her for a scene.
Temple Trial! “Open the way through the temple.” Place the Buggy Ball on the ground and watch the scene. Afterwards, guide your enlarged Ball through the wall.
Back to the Past! “Scan clues inside the temple.” There are 5 clues to find inside the temple. “Sealed Well” in the center. “Horned Statue” on the left of entryway. “Mother Statue” on right of entryway. Two “Temple Mural” on walls. Speak to Triffany after scanning them.
Launch Party! “Put Big Buggy Ball on the ancient Lunchpad.” Chandlo and Floofty will be standing on either side of the Lunchpad. Guide the Ball onto it.
“Activate the ancient Lunchpad.” Use the Snakgrappler on the triggering mechanism on the back of the Lunchpad.
Smorgasbord! “Catch one Cheddaboardle Rex.” The massive Legendary Bugsnax will rise from the ground, and Cheddorbs will drop into the temple from the ceiling. At the same time, boulders will fall onto the two Ancient Lunchpads in the room.
Use the Snakgrappler to clear the boulders on top of the Lunchpads and then stand behind them to trick the Cheddaboardle into throwing Cheddorbs onto the pads. The Lunchpads will auto-aim, so use the Snakgrappler to launch the Cheddorbs into the Bugsnak’s lid. Once hit, the Cheddaboardle will destroy the Lunchpad.
After a couple seconds, new Lunchpads will show up, but there are covered with piles of rocks. Cheddaboardle will also start tossing rocks around. Race over to the cluster of Shrink Spice canisters and throw them at the Cheddorbs. This will cause the Cheddorbs to hide into the holes under the rock piles. Wait for them to grow back to “regular” size, which will clear the Lunchpads. Hit the Cheddaboardle with two more Cheddorbs.
A quick scene will show the appearance of two vertical ramps on either side of the temple. Once again, bait Cheddaboardle into throwing Cheddorbs at you while you stand in front of either ramp. The Cheddorbs should roll up the ramp and get stuck into launchers at the top. Once this is done, use the Snakgrappler to send the Cheddorbs into Cheddaboardle. Be aware that you can’t aim these, so you need to wait until Cheddaboardle is in their path and not throwing rocks. After hitting Cheddaboardle twice more, the Buggy Ball will drop into the temple.
In addition to the Ball’s reappearance, a large maze will appear on the wall. To get the Ball in there, guide it over the Cheddaboardle to get it to pick it up. Then bait it into throwing the Ball up the ramp (which is to the left of the Shrink Spice). Quickly guide the Ball throw the ramp and then launch it at Cheddaboardle.
Now that the protective lid is gone, pick up a Shrink Spice and toss it at the Bugsnak. With it shrunk, guide the Ball over the Cheddaboardle and then race over to snag it with your net.
“Feed one Cheddabordle Rex.” Feed it to Chandlo.
There and Back Again! “Return to Snaktooth Island.” You can either stay (for whatever reason) or ride back to the Island with the rest of the expedition group.
SECRET!!!!
While it's not tied to any achievements, there's an additional story arc you can begin while on Broken Tooth Island. Starting from the expedition camp's bonfire, light the trail of braziers to the underground chamber. Once you've lit the brazier in here (use the bonfire to get the angle right) a secret door will open, revealing a Triangle Key.
The key is used in Boiling Bay. Use the Lunchpad on the right side of Floofty's lab/shipwreck to reach the deck. Then, step forward towards the rocks and the screen will turn blue as you arrive in The Triplicate Space.
Behind you will be a weird triangle shaped staircase taking you back to Boiling Bay. Ahead of you on a flat rock is a tape recorder. After listening to it, continue down the triangle-shaped hallway.
Pedestal in front of intersection. Press to lower it, which will flip open one of the triangular shaped panels in the center of the intersection. Passage left and right. Tape recorder next to center … object.
Left passage: Cathedral statues. Need to face all in same direction. Scanning reveals that turning a statue will rotate its neighbors. There are two tape recorders in here, one near the entrance and one on the far side of the cathedral, near a pedestal that will reset statues if you mess up the solution.
Solution: To rotate the statues, you’ll press the glowing blue triangle on the front of the statue. Have each statue face the center, keeping in mind that if a statue rotates, so do its neighbors. Start at one end of each line and work your way toward the back.
Once all the statues are facing the center, the back wall will open, revealing the water beyond. Press the glowing pedestal and it will sink down, flipping another triangle in the intersection.
Right passage: Pointing statues that can move in three directions. Two more tape recorders (one on left statue, other on pile of rubble right side of room.) You'll learn that this area was discovered by the Snakolytes, who were the descendants of Grumpbeard. If you face all three statues to the center, you’ll hear a chime. A tape recorder will also show up from under the sand. If you face them all towards the back wall, it opens into Jamfoot’s living space. There’s a lot of cool stuff in here to look at (but not interact with), including a pedestal in the back.
Back to the center intersection, where there is now a central pedestal. Press it to open the final door, with another tape recorder within. In this room is a brand new Bugsnak: the Cappucceetle, which will run away as you get close to it.
At this point, we didn’t feel the need to chase after the Cappucceetle, but here’s the strategy from the Bugsnax wiki if you are interested: Cappucceetle
