God Of War Ragnarok features a great deal of hidden and lucrative items, some of which can be difficult to obtain. Such is the case with Smoldering Embers, an essential resource for crafting and upgrading particular gear pieces - like the Smoldering Brimstone Pauldron. While items like Hacksilver can be found anywhere in God Of War Ragnarok, there is only one method to obtain Smoldering Embers.

Before you can begin obtaining Smoldering Embers in God Of War Ragnarok, you must first fulfill a number of tasks. The first is to get the Draupnir Spear by completing the Forging Destiny mission. Once you have the Draupnir Spear, you will need to locate the two halves of the Muspelheim Seed to gain access to Muspelheim via a Mystical Gateway. Heading to Muspelheim will allow you to partake in The Crucible, a vital step in gathering Smoldering Embers.
Completing The First Set Of Muspelheim Trial Challenges
Once you have reached The Crucible in Muspelheim, you will encounter a Nornir Chest at the center of The Crucible arena. While opening Nornir Chests is often accomplished by completing puzzles or lighting Runic Braziers, this particular chest can only be opened by completing the first set of Muspelheim Trials.
The first set of trials can be accessed through the three runic swords located within The Crucible, each of which offers you two challenges to complete - that's six in total. Though successfully completing the trials at each sword will grant you access to a Legendary Chest, you will not be rewarded with Smoldering Embers.
Trial Challenge | How To Complete |
|---|---|
Weapon Mastery | Kill 16 enemies within a time limit |
Flawless | Kill 15 enemies without taking damage |
Ring Out | Defeat 21 enemies that will rapidly regenerate from any damage |
Feed The Rift | Throw orbs into the realm tear to close it before the time runs out |
Population Control | Kill a Bergsra while keeping the number of enemies alive under a certain limit |
King of the Hill | Keep enemies out of the marked area until the time limit runs out |
Now that you have completed the first set of trials, you will be able to open the Nornir Chest you encountered earlier - containing the Chaos Flame along with 10,000XP for Kratos and 2,500XP for your companion. After opening the chest, a fourth sword will appear near it, giving you access to six additional trials after interacting with the sword.

To access each trial, you will need to complete one challenge at two of the three runic swords (used to access the first set of trials). Completing each of the trials at the center sword will reward you with Smoldering Embers - along with Blazing Embers, Glowing Embers, Divine Ashes, XP, and Hacksilver.
