If you read Storked! you know I'm single. A single mom. But, hey, that doesn't mean I'm not dating. It doesn't mean I don't have really adorable male platonic friends-who are good dancers to boot! So why did my friend (not a super-close one) invite me to her wedding at a posh NYC locale without a guest? I don't know either!
I'd been looking forward to the wedding. I participated in the laid-back engagement party, high-tea shower and bachelorette party--the big day was approaching. Woo! As I awaited my invitation in the mail, I thought about the cute, sexy, older guy I'd been seeing on and off and how I couldn't wait to ask him to be my date.
When the invitation finally came, I could not believe my eyes. It was addressed to Ms. Christine Coppa. That's it! People, I'm a 29-year-old woman! A mother! An author! How could I be invited to this ritzy, classy, "black-tie-preferred" wedding sans a guest? Especially considering I didn't really know that many people attending. (Maybe there was a budget or a cap on guests--who knows!)
A few gals that I did know who were married, engaged or dating someone "serious" were invited with a guest--not me. I checked "regretfully can't attend," sent a gift and forgot about it. My friends told me to just suck it up and attend. "Maybe you'll meet someone!" one enthused. Hi...this isn't Wedding Crashers! I don't understand how someone can go to the trouble to tell people on an invitation to basically wear a tux and gown (ooooh, it's soooo formal!) yet not invite an adult with a guest--ahem, etiquette!
__Tell me, have you ever been invited to a wedding sans a guest? Did you attend? Did you meet someone? Would you have not attended if you weren't invited with a guest? (Maybe I'm just sensitive!) __
Full disclosure: I attended four weddings this fall. All with a guest, except the last (on 12-19) because he was snowed in. Come visit me every day on Storked! for more!
