Interesting Facts About Hong Kong National Cricket Team

In the 2004 Asia Cup, Hong Kong participated for the first time in One Day Internationals. Because it came in third place in the 2014 Cricket World Cup Qualifier, it was given ODI status until 2018. After qualifying for the 2014 ICC World Twenty20 in November 2013, the team became a Twenty20 International. In March 2018, Hong Kong lost its ODI status after losing a play-off match to the Netherlands during the 2018 Cricket World Cup Qualifier. After winning the 2018 Asia Cup Qualifier, they did play two more ODI matches at the 2018 Asia Cup in September. This was because the ICC said that all matches at the finals would be ODIs.

Except for 1979 and 2005, Hong Kong has played in every ICC Trophy/World Cup Qualifier tournament. It has also played in two ICC Intercontinental Cup tournaments, in 2005 and 2015–17, and two ICC T20 World Cup tournaments, in 2014 and 2016.

In April 2018, the ICC decided that all of its members would be given full Twenty20 International (T20I) status. So, after January 1, 2019, every Twenty20 match between Hong Kong and another ICC member will be a full T20I.

History

The British brought the sport to Hong Kong. The first game on record took place in 1841, and ten years later, the Hong Kong Cricket Club was formed.

Also, in 2004, Hong Kong didn’t make it past the first round of the ACC Trophy. They lost to Oman and Bahrain in the group stages, so they didn’t qualify for the 2005 ICC Trophy in Ireland.

The first time Hong Kong played in the Intercontinental Cup was in 2005.

Hong Kong got back into Division Three because they came in second.

In 2011, they hosted Division Three and won it by beating Papua New Guinea in the finals. This got them into Division Two, which was held in the United Arab Emirates.

In 2013, the United Arab Emirates hosted the ICC T20 Qualifier. Hong Kong beat Papua New Guinea to finish 6th, which was just enough to get them into the ICC T20 World Cup 2014, which was held in Bangladesh.

In March 2014, Hong Kong beat the host country Bangladesh by two wickets with two balls left to play in the 2014 ICC World Twenty20. However, because they had lost their first two games to Afghanistan and Nepal, they did not make it to the next round of the super 10.

On March 8, 2018, Hong Kong beat Afghanistan in a Cricket World Cup Qualifier. This was their first win in an ODI against a full member.
