Kit Hoover: Why I’m Embracing My Grays on National TV

The only thing I’ve really regularly kept up with is waxing my ’stache for reasons I’m sure you can understand. But I’m truly loving not having to get regular mani-pedis. I only do that to look “presentable” for work.

Still, it’s been nice to have a lot of the pressure taken off to “look perfect” for TV, and instead simply talk to people and do interesting interviews. There’s an ease that was missing before, and not just for regular folks with fascinating stories, but for celebrities too. Maybe it’s being at their home instead of in a studio, but people seem so much more relaxed and authentic. I think if we all let go of this idea that everything has to be perfect, we’d all be so much happier.

I do miss the studio, though. I like that it was separate from my life at home. Now, between shows and interviews, I’m unloading the dishwasher, scrubbing toilets, and doing laundry. Did I mention I’m also a short-order cook for my kids? That said, the hours are certainly nice. And it’s been so wonderful that my daughters have gotten to see me doing my thing and not worrying so much about what I look like on camera. I’m so grateful for this time together.

I’m still not sure when we’ll be back at the studio. Sometimes I hear this summer, other times it’s early fall. Whenever it is, I hope certain things translate over. I’m turning 50 this year, and I feel like this has given me some new perspective. It’s not about the perfect hair and perfect nails. I hope everything is a little less polished and perfect going forward, because that’s what’s beautiful to me.

When I first got into this industry—and quite honestly, even a few years ago—women on TV had to look a certain way: big hair, heavy studio makeup. My current team is already very good about using less, but at the same time, it takes a lot of work to give me that “natural” look. Now I think we can even go with less than we were. Everybody is more relatable, real, and beautiful.

Yesterday I had frizzy hair and couldn’t get my lashes on right. So I was just like, “Screw it, let’s just do a good show.” And you know what, we did.
