Large wildfire in eastern NC 34% contained, forest service says – WSOC TV

TYRRELL COUNTY, N.C. — The North Carolina Forest Service is working to put out a wildfire that is burning near the Outer Banks in eastern North Carolina.

The fire is burning in Tyrell County, which is just across the Alligator River near Manteo. It started on March 24.

WCTI, Channel 9′s affiliate station in New Bern, has reported the fire has been reduced to 5,200 acres and is 34% contained.

Last Resort Fire in Tyrrell County now 34% contained as of 4 p.m., March 26. 5,200 acres in size after more accurate mapping. Firefighting efforts continue. Smoke is a concern through evening and overnight.

The N.C. Forest Service said the rainy weather caused a lot of the smoke to be dispersed to nearby counties.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. No structures are threatened and no one has been hurt.
