Marvel Snap: Best Selene Decks

Quick Links

Marvel Snap's newest card, Selene, joins the list of recent additions (like Matryr and Havok) that have Abilities that can be seen as detrimental to the player using them. Selene is ideal in a disrupt deck and due to her -1-Power, she isn't very beneficial outside of this archetype.

Marvel Snap's newly released card, Blob, can be a real powerhouse. This guide can help you fit him into a deck.

Because of her seemingly negative Ability and lane-reducing Power, it can be tough to find a deck suitable for Selene. The guide below will outline the best uses of the card, some common counters to watch out for, and cards that synergize well with her Ability.

Best Selene Decks

Marvel Snap's Selene card surrounded by Viper, The Hood, Hazmat, and Luke Cage.

Selene's Ability states "On Reveal: Afflict the lowest-Power card in each player’s hand with -3 Power." This means that there is really only one way to play her. Ensure that her ability inflicts maximum damage to your opponent and impacts you as little as possible. For this reason, she works incredibly well when paired with cards like The Hood/Carnage combo, Viper, and Black Widow. There are a few ways to make the most of Selene, and they'll be outlined in the decks below.

On Reveal: Afflict the lowest-Power card in each player’s hand with -3 Power.

Selene Junk Deck

Marvel Snap deck comprised of Selene, Iceman, The hood, Black Widow, Carnage, Viper, Debrii, Green Goblin, Man-Thing, Sentry, Shang-Chi, and Annihilus.

This deck, like most successful Selene decks, will focus heavily on disrupting your opponent. With this deck, players should focus on filling their opponent's hand and side of the board with trash cards. This is doable with Viper*, Black Widow*, Debrii, Green Goblin, and Annihilus. Annihilus can be used on turn five to boot over whatever low-Power cards are still lingering on your side.

Viper can also be used to clean up your side and muddy the opponent's by throwing cards like Sentry's Void, The Hood, or Selene across the board. Shang-Chi exists as a backup plan in case the opponent outpaces your total Power in a lane with a massive card. Man-Thing can also be used to further lower the Power of the useless cards filling the opponent's side. This deck provides quite a few heavy-hitting synergies with Selene. Throwing down Black Widow to give your opponent a -1-Power Widow's Bite on turn four can be a real pain for them. Throwing down Selene followed by The Hood and then kicking The Hood to the opponent's side with Viper is also a deadly combo.

Carnage is in the deck also as a backup plan for any low-Power cards that didn't get sent to your opponent's side of the board. This deck's winning strategy will see pretty low-Power across the board for the player using Selene. The ideal situation is that the opponent has an even lower total Power.

*The deck image shown above has Black Widow listed as a 2-Cost, 1-Power card (it is now 3-Cost, 3-Power) and Viper as a 2-Cost, 3-Power card (it is now 3-Cost, 4-Power) but there have been changes to these in the most recent patch. The "Deck Contents" section below has the correct stats for the mentioned cards and these changes will be noted in future Marvel Snap deck guides.

Selene Toxic Deck

Marvel Snap deck comprised of Selene, The Hood, Spider-Ham, Black Widow, Hazmat, Luke Cage, Viper, Cyclops, Green Goblin, High Evolutionary, The Thing, and Abomination.

This deck, like the previous one, is a Selene disrupt deck. Where the prior deck focused on using cards like Viper* and Annihilus to throw junk cards over to the opponent's side of the board, this deck focuses on lowering the Power of your opponent's cards. This can be accomplished by using cards like Selene, Hazmat, Evolved Cyclops, and Evolved The Thing.

There are some repeat interactions between the last deck and this one, like Black Widow/Selene combo or the Selene, The Hood, Viper combo. These are great fallbacks to sucker punch your opponent's hand, but the main focus should be lowering their cards' Power. Evolved Abomination can also benefit from this lowered Power and give players a good spread or Power on turn six.

Best Selene Counters

Marvel Snap's Selene card surrounded by Green Goblin and Hobgoblin.

There aren't a ton of counters for Selene. The most obvious would be Cosmo as Selene's Ability is an On Reveal one, and Cosmo cancels all On Reveal Abilities from happening in the lane where he is played. Luke Cage is another obvious counter as he stops the user's cards from having their Power lowered, which directly contradicts Selene's Ability. Some counters that may not be as obvious will be Green Goblin and Hobgoblin.

Since they are already some of the lowest Power cards in the game, if they reside in your opponent's hand when Selene is played, they're pretty much guaranteed to be the recipient of her -3 Power. This is an issue because their On Reveal Ability sends them to your side of the board when played by an opponent. This means you're dooming yourself to a low-Power card in this situation. A good counter to this counter is Annihilus, a card present in the first deck (Selene Junk Deck) listed.

Best Selene Synergies

Marvel Snap's Selene card surrounded by Black Widow, Viper, Green Goblin, and Hobgoblin.

Selene works well with a lot of other cards, namely disrupt cards. A full list of cards and how they interact with Selene can be found below.

  • Black Widow - Black Widow adds a -1 Power Widow's Bite to your opponent's hand. Selene can lower this even further, forcing them to play a -4 Power card.
  • Green Goblin - Green Goblin is already disruptive to your opponent, but Selene can lower his Power by an additional -3 Power. This means playing him will push a -6 Power card to your opponent's side of the board. That's easily enough Power to lose a lane.
  • Hobgoblin - Hobgoblin is in the same exact boat as Green Goblin, except Selene's Ability will lower him to -11 Power. That's a huge hit for opponents.
  • Viper - Viper can throw cards to your opponent's side of the board, whether that's Selene herself or another card that her its Power lowered by her Ability (like The Hood).
  • Killmonger - Killmonger is great to throw into a deck with Selene, because she has a -1 Power on the outset. Killmonger can serve as a way to eliminate that negative Power from your lanes. It's even better when paired with a card like Nova that can benefit other cards on top of being destroyed.
  • The Hood - The Hood's strategy is usually to be played for his On Reveal Ability (Demon added to your hand) and then serves as an easy destroy or junk card. He naturally fits well with Selene, because he acts as a martyr to soak up her negative Ability and can then be destroyed by cards like Carnage or Killmonger.

Is Selene Worth It?

Marvel Snap's Selene card surrounded by question marks.

When thinking about the impact on the current meta, Selene is a tough card to call. It stands to reason, that with the rise of disrupt, junk, and toxic decks with cards like Martyr, Havok, and Annihilus being recently added to the game, Selene is at the height of her power in the meta right now. For this reason, it's a decent idea to grab her while she's around if you play a lot of disrupt decks or want a card that synergizes well with Annihilus, but she likely won't have a huge impact on the current meta. There are definitely better cards in the upcoming Spotlight Caches, so if you're low on Keys or just don't like the alternate cards in this week's Spotlight, it's a good idea to skip her.

She is a Tier 5 card, which means she will cost 6,000 Tokens in the Token Shop if players don't obtain her via the Spotlight Cache. In her Spotlight week, she will be featured alongside Iron Lad and Black Knight. While Black Knight is an underwhelming card, Iron Lad is phenomenal so if he's still missing from your collection you could grab him as well.
