Massive fire at west side salvage yard ruled accidental

Firefighters say a blaze that burned for nearly three hours at a west side auto yard was set by accident.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - Firefighters say a blaze that burned for nearly three hours at a west side auto yard was set by accident.

The fire broke out around 5 p.m. at 2 Little Bees Auto Parts on S. Tibbs Road. Fire investigators say a customer was using a drill to remove a car part and sparks ignited gasoline on the ground. The man reported the fire to employees of the business who tried to put it out with no success.

The customer left the scene and didn't return, firefighters said.

Firefighters from the Indianapolis Fire Department and the Wayne Township Fire Department fought the fire for nearly three hours. Part of their attack included a forklift operator from the business lifting cars off of a pile to be put out individually.

Firefighters said about 100 cars, stacked in two piles of approximately 50 cars each, were involved in the fire. Damages were estimated at $20,000.
