Mercy Johnson Okojie is from Okene, Kogi State. She was born on August 28, 1984 and is the fourth of seven children born to Daniel Johnson, a retired naval commander, and his wife Elizabeth in Lagos State. She started her education in Calabar, Cross River State. Her father was eventually relocated to Lagos State, where she completed her education at the Nigerian Navy Primary School. She attended Rivers State Secondary School and the Nigerian Navy Secondary School in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, for her secondary education.
Career
Mercy Johnson’s acting career began when she attempted but failed to progress to a higher institution. She did not write the University Matriculation Examination (UME), and instead of languishing at home, she tried to do something with her life.
She began selling sachet water, worked as a housekeeper, and sold a variety of items before deciding to pursue a career in acting.
She auditioned for a role in The Maid shortly after finishing high school and appeared in films such as Hustlers, Baby Oku in America, and War in the Palace. She received Best Supporting Actress at the 2009 African Movie Award event for her work in the film Live to Remember in 2009 and Best Actress at the 2013 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards for her appearance in the comedy film Dumebi the Dirty Girl in 2013.
She was named Google’s most searched Nigerian celebrity in December 2011, a title she kept till 2012. She was the Kogi State Governor’s Senior Special Assistant (SSA) for entertainment, arts, and culture from 2017 to 2021.
Mercy Johnson was once barred from acting because she was too expensive. On November 3, 2013, Nollywood movie marketers threatened to ban her from the industry because of her high demands.
She was barred from acting, along with co-Nollywood actors Genevieve Nnaji, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, Richard Mofe Damijo, Emeka Ike, Ramsey Nouah, Nkem Owoh, Stella Damasus, and Jim Iyke, for allegedly requesting exorbitant fees per movie. Following an apology from the actress, the prohibition was revoked by marketers/producers on March 9, 2014.
Her first film as a producer was The Legend of Inikpi.
She has various personal companies in addition to being an actress. Her kitchen talk show is one of her business efforts.
