MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Ripley’s Aquarium of Myrtle Beach announced Thursday the name of their first penguin chick, WPDE reported.
The aquarium said his name is Egerton, and that his birth is a proud accomplishment for them.
His name was “inspired by our good friend Egerton Burroughs, we are edge over heels for our Aquarium’s newest addition,” according to Ripley’s.
Egerton is an endangered African penguin. Their species population is quickly declining due to predators and industrial fishing.
“Births like Egerton’s help us protect this species through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan, ensuring the survival of threatened and endangered animals in the wild,” the aquarium said.
The penguin chick is currently residing at the Penguin Nursery, but the aquarium said he will be joining the colony at Penguin Playhouse soon.
