S. Indiana steamboat museum starts expansion project

Jeffersonville - A southern Indiana museum about river steamboats is expanding and will open more rooms in its main 1890s mansion home to the public.

The Howard Steamboat Museum in Jeffersonville recently completed a $1 million fundraising campaign for a new collections-management building and held a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday.

Museum administrator Yvonne Knight tells The Evening News that the climate-controlled building will allow for better preservation of artifacts about the Howard family, which owned an Ohio River shipyard that built thousands of steamboats. It will also have room for exhibit preparation and on-loan holdings.

The mansion is also undergoing renovations, including a new heating and air conditioning system. Knight says some rooms in the mansion that have been used for storage could be opened to visitors later this year.
