Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has announced a total ban on commercial motorcycles, also known as Okada, in some local government areas of the state.
The ban is effective from June 1.

Affected local government areas include Ikeja, Surulere, Eti-Osa, Lagos Mainland, Lagos Island and Apapa.
The announcement is coming after the governor’s meeting with the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Sylvester Alabi, and high ranking officers across the state.
The meeting was held on Wednesday at the Lagos House, Ikeja.
Also in attendance was the Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat; Chief of Staff to the Governor, Tayo Ayinde; among others.
It is not the first time the Lagos State Government is announcing a ban on commercial motorcycles in the state.
In February 2020, the state government restricted the operation of motorcyclists and tricyclists to six local government areas, including bike-hailing companies like O’Ride, Max NG and others.

Citing the safety of residents and to avert fatal accidents, the governor in May 2021 again announced a total ban on commercial motorcycles, to take effect two months later.
