‘Spare’: Prince Harry’s memoir reveals secrets you need to know about the Royal Family

The Duke of Sussex, Prince Harry, is many things: a prince, philanthropist, war veteran, husband, and father, but he recently put another cap to his head as a writer/author with the publication of his memoir, and virtually everyone, even his so-called haters, cannot seem to stop talking about “Spare.”

The Anglo-American multinational publishing company, Penguin Random House LLC, had revealed in July 2021 that the Duke of Sussex was writing an autobiography of himself that covers everything, from his public upbringing to his time serving in Afghanistan to becoming a spouse.

In contrast to the conventional and conservative lifestyle that is associated with the royal family, Prince Harry (born Henry Charles Albert David) has, over the years, been the only member of the English royal family who publicly sought to want a normal style of living. Due to his extremely casual lifestyle and life choices, which did not sit well with his household’s doctrines, the Duke of Sussex has become quite a unique character amongst the members of the English royal house.

In recent years, this has led to a cascade of press articles written about him. But despite this, Prince Harry has continued to live his own life as he pleases. His decision to publish a tell-all book was inspired by events in his life.

Speaking about the book, he let it be known that he was going to recount his life’s events in all honesty.

In his own words: I’m writing this not as the prince I was born but as the man I have become, I’ve worn many hats over the years, both literally and figuratively, and my hope is that in telling my story—the highs and lows, the mistakes, the lessons learned—II can help show that no matter where we come from, we have more in common than we think.

Key takeaways from the book

The passing of his mother

Regarding the passing of his mother, Princess Diana, the late princess of Wales, who passed away on August 30, 1997, Harry is open and honest about his feelings. The Duke of Sussex expressed his remorse about their final discussion, which took place only hours before her death in a catastrophic car accident. He described it as a brief exchange that a 12-year-old Harry purposefully hurried because he had games to get back to.

He wrote, “I had been short with her, impatient to get to my games.” He went on by stating that the quest for peace after that call took decades.

Killing 25 Taliban Fighters in Afghanistan

Prince Harry is an ex-military officer, and he made sure to detail his experience during his assignment in the Middle Eastern nation of Afghanistan. Fighting alongside men of the British armed forces, Prince Harry revealed that he eliminated 25 Taliban fighters during combat.

He wrote: “While in the heat of combat, I didn’t think of those 25 people. You can’t kill people if you think of them as people. They were chess pieces removed from the board, Bads taken away before they could kill Goods. I’d been trained to ‘otherize’ them, trained well. On some level, I recognized this learned detachment as problematic. But I also saw it as an unavoidable part of soldiering.”

Following his revelation, his words have drawn condemnation from certain British security and military leaders and have also triggered a heated response from the Taliban, who have blasted his conduct, labelling him a “big mouth loser”.

The altercation with Prince William

Just a week before the book’s formal release, social media exploded in response to The Guardian‘s comprehensive expose of a physical fight between Prince William and Prince Harry, as narrated by Harry in the book, According to Harry, William knocked him to the floor during a heated argument over his wife, Meghan.

Struggles with anxiety

In his memoir, Prince Harry was quite open about his psychological battles. He described how his fear of public speaking evolved into a phobia of crowds, which heightened around his 30th birthday. He feels it is post-traumatic stress disorder, caused by a combination of his mother’s death and his combat experience.

Harry went on to detail his father’s reaction when he opened up to him about his mental health difficulties, insinuating that his father, King Charles, accepted responsibility for his position.

Charles said: “I suppose it’s my fault.” “I should’ve got you the help you needed years ago,” to which Harry noted: “I assured him that it wasn’t his fault. But I appreciated the apology.”

The book, has so far, lived up to all of its expectations and delivered on its promise of expository writing, providing readers with a bombshell of revelations about the Royal Family.

The book’s steady stream of disclosures leading up to its release has been the main driver of its skyrocketing sales rate. According to James Marriott of The London Times, the book is a “400-page therapy session for mystic Harry.

Controversial and outspoken broadcaster, Piers Morgan, slammed Prince Harry over the revelations made in his memoir. While speaking on his show Uncensored, Morgan admitted that “there is no doubt that this is highly entertaining in parts, it’s riveting, it’s incredibly intrusive. You can’t believe what you are reading”.

The former editor of the Daily Mirror noted that while the memoir “will be a number one bestseller”, he, however, questioned the rationality of the prince writing the book, saying: “He’ll make millions but at what cost? He’s blown it with his entire family.”
