Stripped Naked: Is stripping a woman naked for stealing justifiable?

To strip someone naked is the act of removing one’s cloth from head to toe. Depending on the context, the phrase ‘stripped naked’ is not bad because it can mean many things. You can strip naked in your bathroom, in your room, in your house. But the phrase ‘stripped naked’ takes on a darker meaning when someone is stripped naked outside in the public’s eye.

Focusing on women, society is not new to this act of ladies being stripped naked as a form of punishment. While some people remain silent when they see women being stripped naked, it is not an act that should be applauded. In a world where theft is a crime, it can be easy to forget that there are cultural and historical reasons why some punishments are deemed to be more severe than others.

While there is no denying that stealing is wrong, it is also important to understand why certain punishments, like stripping a woman naked, are still being used to this day.

Why are women who are caught stealing stripped naked?

In recent years, there has been a rise in cases of women being stripped naked in public for allegedly stealing. This practice has been reported in countries like Nigeria, India, Pakistan and others. It has been seen as a form of humiliation and public shaming, one that has been largely ignored by the mainstream media.

In some cultures, the practice of stripping women caught stealing is still prevalent today. The practice is seen as a way to publicly shame the woman and deter others from committing the same crime. But it is important to question oneself and ask: is this right, should this be encouraged in today’s society?

This practice is not only used in countries with limited laws and regulations on theft, but also in places with more modern laws and punishments in place. Even in countries with laws that protect a person’s right to privacy and dignity, such as Nigeria, the practice of stripping women caught stealing is still used.

While there are many potential explanations for this phenomenon, the most likely is that the practice is rooted in cultural and societal norms. In many of these countries, women are seen as second-class citizens and are often not respected or taken seriously by their male counterparts. This often leaves women feeling powerless and vulnerable, which can be taken advantage of by anarchists.

It is also likely that this practice is used as a form of punishment, as it can be seen as a humiliation to the victim and a warning to others. In many cases, this is done without any due process as the authorities and police are not notified and will certainly not want to get involved in such a humiliating situation.

Asides from the police not wanting to get involved, there have been instances, whereby before the police could get to the scene of the alleged crime, the mob has already taken the law into their hands. While it is certainly not the ideal way to punish someone for stealing, it does send a message that there are consequences for such actions.

Ultimately, the stripping of women who are caught stealing is a clear violation of women’s rights and should not be condoned in any way. There are many more humane and effective ways to punish such behaviour, and such extreme measures should not be used as a way to publicly shame someone. It is up to the people to speak out against this practice and to ensure that all women are treated with the respect and dignity they deserve. Not forgetting that there is the psychological effect it has on the woman being stripped naked and even the woman watching another woman being stripped naked.

Social media has also played a role in promoting this wrong act because when videos show how a woman was stripped naked for stealing, there are still people in the comment section who would applaud the act and say this should serve as a lesson. As long as there is law in society, there will always be crimes committed and as human beings, people should stop degrading each other and treating each other as animals. Why should people as humans, who claim to be more intelligent than animals do such?

Under Nigerian law, there is no justification for stripping a woman or man naked. Everyone has a right to their private and family life; that right should not be taken away from them. A woman is the owner of her body and whether to prove a point or not, stripping her naked for stealing is a violation of her human right as a person.

Under the Nigerian Anti-Torture Act of 2015, stripping someone naked is an act of torture and is punishable under Nigerian law. It states:

…For the purpose of this act, torture includes –

Inflicting shame by stripping a person naked parading him in a public place, shaving his head or putting marks in his body against his will…

Anyone found guilty of inflicting the above on anyone is liable on conviction to imprisonment of 25 years.

The Anti-Torture Act states:

A person who contravenes section 2 of this Act commits an offense and is liable on conviction to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 25 years.

The question of why are women who are caught stealing are stripped naked should not even be asked because the act of stripping a woman naked for stealing should not exist in society today. It is sad how people ignore the law and take it into their hands. To improve society, it starts from the masses by putting an end to acts like this and letting the law take its cause for every crime.
