Students evacuated at Lawrence elementary school after fire on the roof

Students at Amy Beverland Elementary School were evacuated in the 8:00 a.m. hour Friday and are not allowed to re-enter the building.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — Students had to evacuate at a Lawrence Township elementary school after a fire on the roof Friday morning.

Students at Amy Beverland Elementary School were escorted out of the building Friday morning and were not allowed to re-enter the building.

A fire alarm sounded at 7:49 a.m. inside the school.

An investigation from firefighters found a hallway and several rooms full of smoke.

Construction workers were using torches to cut bolts on rafters when they accidentally heated nearby drywall, resulting in smoldering and flames.

Firefighters had the fire under control at 8:30 a.m.

A representative with Lawrence Township Schools said parents are asked to pick up their children by 9:30 a.m. on the north side of the school. Those who cannot be picked up will be transported to Lawrence North High School.

Two teachers were check on the scene for possible smoke inhalation but both are OK.
