Turning colder | Oct. 6, 2023

Gusts over 30 mph at times during Operation Football with wind-whipped showers and falling temperatures.

INDIANAPOLIS — Buckle up for an interesting weather ride this evening in central Indiana with the arrival of a strong cold front.

Though we enjoyed sun and near 70 degrees most of the afternoon, we want you prepared for abrupt changes to the weather (not our forecast) between now and 8 p.m.

During that time from west to east, clouds increase, a narrow axis of quick-moving showers of rain and/or graupel cross the state, gusts exceed 30 mph at times and temperatures drop into the 40s/50s as the front sweeps through the state.

We know it doesn't seem like that's possible, but you'll certainly want to dress for those elements if you plan to be outside this evening attending Operation Football games. By the end of most games, wind chills could be flirting with the 30s.

That's what you can expect to open the weekend Saturday morning when it will feel some 50 degrees colder than the unseasonably warm highs from earlier this week.

Though there may some sunshine during early morning hours this weekend, we're still forecasting mostly cloudy to overcast coverage for most in central Indiana both Saturday and Sunday. This typically occurs during strong cold air advection set-ups like we'll be in during that time.

These same types of set-ups also can squeeze out showers from lake effect and/or upper disturbances rotating around the intense storm center over Quebec.

That storm system will retrograde (move back to the west) into early next week which will keep our weather unseasonably chilly into at least Tuesday.
